For an After Theater Hang Out

Joe Allen in NYC is a notorious restaurant for theatergoers and the Broadway stars they adore. It was listed in my guide “The Best Things to Do in New York” and of course as well in the New York City Frommer’s Guide. It is considered to be one of the most important eateries on “Restaurant Row”, the nickname for 46th Street between 8th and 9th Avenues. It is a street lined with great things to see and eat.  Joe Allen should be at the top of this list.

The restaurant is unassuming in the lower lever of the brownstone building it calls home. If it weren’t for the bright green sign above I would have continued to walk on by. I was eager as ever to get in and see what this place was all about. Once inside, the restaurant embodies casual elegance.

I went on a Saturday afternoon. This was not ideal for star gazing, as most performers do not go to a sit down meal in between shows. That was okay with me; I had planned on that. I was there instead to enjoy the atmosphere and sample the menu. As usual I had some company on hand, so I got to taste everything and still had room to try the desserts.

Here is the stuff that will make your mouth water:

The food here was excellent. There is a mix of sandwiches, salads, and entrees that you won’t find just anywhere. The quality of the food stood out. The entrees like organic chicken breast and salmon was delectable. Even an ordinary cheeseburger tasted like something you wish you could make at home.  The desserts were even better. They were creative and richly divine.

If you are only interested in a pre-theater drink, there is a separate bar area.

So was it worth all the hype? I would say so. I think it’s a great alternative for pre or post theater dining. The service was friendly and didn’t rush you out. But I did like that they asked if you were seeing a show so they knew how to time your courses.

If you are planning to go, be sure to make a reservation especially on the weekends because this place books up fast. However, they will only take reservations exactly one week before you plan to go, so it is important to keep that in mind.

To get the most out of your trip to Joe Allen go right after an evening performance for the best chance to see an actor or actress up close without a barricade dividing you.

In case you are traveling and want to compare, there are also locations in London and Paris.

For a New Chain of Mexican Fast Food: “Dos Toros Taqueria”

When it comes to fast food there are the names we are familiar with: McDonald’s, Burger King, Wendy’s, and Chipotle.  In you live in New York City, there is a new kid in town: Dos Toros.  Dos Toros is relatively new to this area but with any hope there might be one in your town soon.  Started by two brothers, Leo and Oliver Kremer, from Berkeley, California, the Mexican food you find here is inspired by food they loved growing up.  In California, the brothers grew up worshipping Gordo Taqueria, a favorite of Bay Area residents since 1977 (now promptly added to my San Francisco to eat list). Much of the recipes and even decor found at Dos Toros has been modeled on Gordo. Before moving to NYC in 2008, the brothers were living very different lives. Leo was the bassist for the band “Third Eye Blind”. Oliver fresh out of college, considered working in the technology or finance industry. Both disillusioned with their lives, they decided to pursue so...

For Intermission in Hyde Park: “Eveready Diner”

I have been spending a lot of time with the Roosevelt’s lately, and it has been delightful. Despite the fact that my favorite members of this famous family have passed, they still bring me an exceeding amount of joy and inspiration. It is less strange than it sounds and I can prove it. As part of my ritual of trying to accomplish all of the things on my annual to do list (http://thequeenoff-ckingeverything.blogspot.com/2015/03/for-year-5-2015-2016-to-do-list.html), I decided this was the year I would finally make to each of the Roosevelt residences that have been on my list for as long as I can remember. Small goals like that are how I tackle a list as long as mine. But the houses aren’t the focal point just yet. First we are going to talk about the places I got to scope out because I was in the backyard of greatness. So while I am starting out with food, it is not the way the day progressed. First I found myself at...

For a Doughnut Worthy of Food Network Glory: “Dun-Well Doughnuts”

All because I wanted a Boston creme doughnut. That is how this blog truly began. It was Father’s Day weekend and although I was initially thinking of myself, I knew my father wouldn’t mind having a sweet treat for dessert. Brooklyn is synonymous with great pizza, bread, and of course bagels. But it also has many great bakeries producing some of the most delicious doughnuts you have ever tasted. Just to name a few, there is: Doughnut Plant , Peter Pan Donut & Pastry Shop and Dough .   On the day of my craving, I did what any of us do countless times a day - I opened Google. When I Googled “best Boston creme doughnuts in Brooklyn” Dun-Well Doughnuts appeared high on that list. Intrigued I researched it further and learned that it had won the Canadian  Food Network’s contest called “Donut Showdown” in 2013. That was enough information for me to decide to visit the very next day.  Dun-Well Doughnuts was opened by Dan Dunbar and Christopher Hollowell in December...
