For Find Out Friday - Week 48 What Are the Answers to the Two Most Burning Questions All Pizza Lovers Have?


Pizza has been on my mind lately. Actually it is always on my mind. I love it so. As a t-shirt I saw once said: “Pizza is the best”. It really is, even the crappy kind.

The first question I think we pizza lovers need the answer to is: “why are all pizza boxes square even when you order a round pie”? I asked my mother this question and she suggested this as a Find Out Friday topic. So here we are.

Honestly I didn't think I would find any info out online about this topic but God bless Google as they provide us with an abundance of useless knowledge. 

The basic answer is because its cheaper. Square boxes are made from one sheet of cardboard and bonus they can be stored flat all stacked up. Easy Peasy.

But once you know why pizza boxes are square don't you want to know why pizza slices are triangular? Well, that too is pretty easy to answer. Triangles are the easiest way to divide up a circular object. Duh.

In case anyone else was wondering, Sicilian a.k.a. square pies aren't true pizzas according to the "Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana” (True Neapolitan Pizza Association). In 1984 they ruled that for pizza to be authentic pizza it must not exceed thirteen point seven inches in diameter. Why Moses didn't inscribe that into stone I will never know.

After solving these riddles I have one more remaining puzzle to solve. Who is the Margherita pizza named after? The Margherita pizza, sometimes also known as a Grandma pie, is one of my favorite kinds of pizza. I love, no scratch that I live for fresh mozzarella and that is superstar of the Margherita pizza.  

Now for the question at hand, the answer appears to be Queen Margherita of Savoy of Italy who reigned from 1878 until her death in 1926. Legend is that the Margherita pizza was created by the Neapolitan pizza maker Rafaele Esposito as a way to honor the Queen. The pizza had tomatoes, cheese, and fresh basil, all the colors present in the Italian flag. 

Perhaps this is another reason I love Margherita pizza so much; pride in my maternal heritage.

For a Doughnut Worthy of Food Network Glory: “Dun-Well Doughnuts”

All because I wanted a Boston creme doughnut. That is how this blog truly began. It was Father’s Day weekend and although I was initially thinking of myself, I knew my father wouldn’t mind having a sweet treat for dessert. Brooklyn is synonymous with great pizza, bread, and of course bagels. But it also has many great bakeries producing some of the most delicious doughnuts you have ever tasted. Just to name a few, there is: Doughnut Plant , Peter Pan Donut & Pastry Shop and Dough .   On the day of my craving, I did what any of us do countless times a day - I opened Google.
